Jean-Yves Alquier and his guitar concepts
Jean-Yves puts passion into his instruments. Along with it, he injects some philosophy, giving meaning to each of his guitars. Always looking to push boundaries, Alquier pioneered the eco-responsible Ethiq guitar line, which includes some bamboo.
He does not want to inhibit his approach. Armed with a global know-how and an incessant drive to go beyond with audacious designs.
Each of his guitars tells a story and reflects his philosophy. The results are magnificent instruments that can be considered works of art.
He started researching new ways to his craft, determined to unshackle design from existing norms. He presented his first concepts as a trilogy, consecutively from 2009 to 2011. Air Mail Special and Papaleocada were included in Robert Shaw’s book, “Electrified: The Art of the Contemporary Electric Guitar” and the Gnossienne was featured on the cover of Premiere Guitar US magazine.
After seeing the Air Mail Special, this one-of-a-kind instrument at the 2009 Montreal Guitar Show, Guitar & Bass Magazine described it as “a jaw dropping ‘50s-inspired hollow-body tour de force in eye-aching red with auto-style aluminum binding, a single Charlie Christian pickup, and the appearance of being sucked rather than craved from wood. From the fearless concept to the tiniest detail of the handmade hardware, it was killer”.
In 2014 Jean-Yves has already issued a series of guitars presented at the Winter NAMM show in Los Angeles and which came from his concepts, the Fastback guitars.
In 2015 Jean-Yves was awarded Meilleur Ouvrier de France in guitar making with his “Mapple Taffy” jazz guitar.
This unique award recognizes his master craftsmanship as a guitar luthier.
